To ensure a stable and consistent output amplitude from the magnetic head, it is crucial to minimize the air gap between the magnetic scale and the head. Since air has a high magnetic resistance, any significant or fluctuating gap could lead to signal instability. Therefore, it is preferable for the system to operate in a contact mode. In practice, the magnetic head is pressed against the magnetic tape during operation, which helps maintain good contact even if the tape surface is slightly uneven. There is typically a small gap of about 0.01 mm between the linear magnetic scale and the magnetic head. However, due to limitations in assembly and adjustment, the system cannot always achieve perfect contact. As a result, the linear magnetic grid usually operates in a quasi-contact state. Another important feature of the magnetic grid is that the magnetic scale must be kept under a certain level of tension. This tension ensures that the scale remains flat and aligned, which is critical for maintaining accurate and reliable readings over time. Proper tension also helps reduce mechanical deformation and improves the overall performance of the system.
