After more than two and a half centuries, the Bergen’s Villa Terminus Hotel has been reimagined by the renowned design studio Claesson Koivisto Rune. This historic building, originally built in the 1770s, was once a shelter for those in need and later transformed into an elderly care facility. Now, it stands as a stunning hotel that blends history with modern elegance.

The transformation was led by the Stockholm-based studio, who chose to preserve the building’s exterior while completely revamping the interiors. The result is a space where contemporary design meets historical charm, creating a unique atmosphere that feels both timeless and fresh.
The 18-room hotel features clean, minimalist walls paired with vibrant furniture and decor. Some rooms showcase pieces designed by Claesson Koivisto Rune, while others include works from renowned designers like Ilse Crawford. The interiors are a celebration of design across different eras, creating a seamless blend of past and present.
In the dining area, white rustic chairs contrast beautifully with copper pendant lights and floral accents, while the bedrooms feature natural materials and woven textiles that add warmth and texture. A library filled with Norwegian literature and history adds another layer of cultural richness to the space.
The design team incorporated mid-century furniture and lighting throughout the common areas, creating a warm and inviting ambiance. The overall concept was to erase the boundaries of time, blending elements from various periods into a cohesive and harmonious whole.
Inspired by the work of Danish artist Vilhelm Hammershøi, known for his minimalistic and neutral interiors, the designers aimed to create a serene and light-filled environment. The goal was to evoke a sense of calm and Scandinavian simplicity, making the space feel like a peaceful retreat.
Claesson Koivisto Rune, though trained as an architect, has made a name for themselves through their unique approach to furniture, lighting, and home accessories. Their ability to merge form and function makes this project not just a hotel, but a true design masterpiece.
