Ken Fulk, the renowned interior designer, has once again amazed with a stunning transformation that leaves everyone in awe. The project focused heavily on back-of-house renovations, including the creation of what Ken calls “really sexy bathrooms.†Throughout the space, original elements were preserved, and public areas remained largely unchanged, especially the signature curry orange tile that adds a unique charm to the hotel.
This modern hotel successfully blends old-world design with contemporary elegance, promising an unforgettable experience for its guests.
The hotel, which includes a newly built Inn designed by Moule & Polyzoides, features 42 rooms and 12 suites, five of which are located in the original landmark manse. This historic home's quirks and lavish finishes served as the inspiration for the overall design concept. Ken Fulk shared his excitement about the project, saying, “There’s just something that makes me feel like a kid. I think the great hotels of the world are quirky. They’re eccentric, they’re unusual. They imprint these memories on you. So we really wanted this to have a point of view.â€
The project was inspired by the mansion and the commodore’s legacy, leading Ken Fulk to collaborate with Auberge Resorts Collection on a luxury hotel in Austin, Texas. He had long been a fan of the city, having visited the Round Top Antiques Fair, done residential work there, and enjoyed the vibrant music scene.
Ken Fulk added layers of wall coverings, drapes, and fabulous beds, along with decorative paintings and murals. One standout feature is a hand-painted mural at the top of the spiral staircase by Deborah Phillips.
In the mansion, the Hal Thompson suite features almost-Tiffany blue paint paired with Pierre Frey’s cactus-strewn Pampa print. The Mr. and Mrs. Perry double suite is all glamour, complete with a decadent soaking tub and a four-poster bed. The Edgar Junior suite is tented, while the former staff quarters, LaVerne, became the most luxurious room, fully covered in Frey fabric. The new wing includes rooms with Juliette balconies, filled with antiques, reproductions from Round Top, and unique finds.
The hotel also includes a social club component, offering members and guests access to exclusive amenities such as workshops, concerts on the loggia, a living room with chesterfield sofas, a craft cocktail bar, multiple libraries, and dining options. A new restaurant, Lutie’s, designed by Clayton & Little, will embrace the old stone walls, with Ken Fulk adding floral-themed interiors.
