(a) Connect the oscilloscope's power cord to an outlet and turn on the power switch. The power indicator light should illuminate. Once the scan line appears on the screen, adjust the brightness control to a comfortable level and fine-tune the focus knob to make the scan line as sharp as possible. (b) Adjust the baseline control so that the scan line aligns perfectly with the horizontal scale lines on the display.
How to Use an Oscilloscope
1) Testing Procedure
(a) Plug in the oscilloscope’s power cable and turn on the power switch. Wait for the scan line to appear on the screen. Then adjust the brightness to a suitable level and use the focus control to make the line as clear and thin as possible.
(b) Adjust the baseline knob until the scan line is parallel to the horizontal grid lines on the display. This ensures accurate measurements.
(c) Turn the fine adjustment/expansion control knob clockwise to the calibration position. Before performing any measurements, it's essential to check and calibrate the probe. To do this, connect the probe to the oscilloscope’s built-in square wave output. Adjust the compensation capacitor on the probe until the displayed square wave has a flat top with no overshoot or distortion.
(d) Set the volts per division selector, the mode switch, and the time base selector according to the signal’s expected amplitude and frequency. This helps in getting a clear and accurate waveform on the screen.
(e) First, set the input coupling switch to “GND†to locate the zero reference level. Then switch it to “AC†and connect the probe to the signal source. Adjust the trigger control until the waveform stabilizes on the screen. Observe the vertical height of the waveform and multiply the number of divisions by the volts per division setting to determine the voltage. If using a 10:1 probe, remember to multiply the measured value by 10 for the actual signal voltage.
2) Important Precautions During Measurement
(a) Avoid placing the oscilloscope near strong magnetic fields, as this can interfere with the readings.
(b) Ensure the signal amplitude does not exceed the oscilloscope’s maximum input voltage rating. Exceeding this may damage the internal amplifier.
(c) Keep the oscilloscope’s case isolated from any conductive surfaces to prevent short circuits.
(d) When measuring AC voltage, the oscilloscope displays the peak-to-peak value, not the RMS value.
(e) Use the shortest test leads possible and keep the probe as close as possible to the point of measurement. Long cables or improper placement can cause signal distortion and inaccurate results.
