Dongguan Man Expo: An exhibition inciting an industrial cluster

The 6th Man Expo is set to open on August 21, marking another milestone in Dongguan’s journey as a cultural and industrial hub. Since its debut in 2009, the event has been held annually in this southern Chinese city, with five successful editions already under its belt. Over the years, the Man Expo has not only become a significant landmark in China's animation industry but has also played a key role in reshaping Dongguan's image from a traditional manufacturing center to a vibrant cultural and creative hub. According to officials from the Executive Committee of the 6th Man Expo, the event has grown significantly over the years. In the past five sessions, there were 2,031 exhibitors, covering an exhibition area of 327,000 square meters, with over 2.71 million visitors. The expo has effectively integrated domestic and international animation resources, creating a powerful platform for industry collaboration and promoting the transformation and upgrading of traditional industries in the region. It has now become a symbol of Dongguan's cultural leap forward. Beyond its growing scale, the Man Expo has increasingly focused on copyright transactions and protection, emphasizing its role in connecting industry players. Starting from the 4th session, the event introduced a brand licensing exhibition, which has led to 24 major animation brand licensing projects with a total turnover of 2.9 billion yuan. This shift highlights the expo’s evolving purpose — not just as a showcase, but as a bridge between creativity and commerce. Pan Xinchao, a member of the Standing Committee of the Municipal Party Committee and head of the Propaganda Department, emphasized at the recent mobilization meeting for the 6th Man Expo that Dongguan's cultural industry achieved an added value of 26.4 billion yuan last year, representing a 29% increase from the previous year. This accounted for 4.8% of the city’s GDP, ranking it third among the nine Pearl River Delta cities, behind only Huizhou and Shenzhen. A well-organized fair can boost local cultural consumption, stimulate economic growth, and contribute to the city's steady development. Officials from the Executive Committee also noted that the impact of the Man Expo on Dongguan is becoming more profound. Through the expo’s platform, many original animation companies have chosen to establish themselves in the city, while traditional enterprises have built valuable industry docking platforms. This has helped foster the growth of the animation sector and improved Dongguan’s overall industrial structure. In addition to boosting the animation industry, the Man Expo has also revitalized other sectors. For example, some traditional manufacturers have found new life by leveraging the creative opportunities brought by the event. Companies associated with the Manchu Fair are now seeing renewed interest, and the cultural and economic momentum generated by the expo continues to grow.
