Nearly 70% of consumers prefer paper food packaging

A recent survey conducted by YouGov, a well-known research agency in China, collected responses from 7,076 consumers. Out of these, 4,857 participants shared their opinions on how product presentation influences their purchasing decisions. Many reported that fresh foods and fruits displayed on shelves or stored in containers significantly increase their desire to buy. The survey also explored consumer preferences between plastic and paper packaging.

Among the 4,857 respondents, 68% preferred paper packaging, while 32% opted for plastic. When asked if they would choose paper or plastic packaging for fresh products of equal price and quality, 41% said they didn’t care about the type of packaging, with some admitting they weren’t even aware of the differences. However, the remaining 59% showed a strong preference—85% of them were more inclined to purchase items wrapped in paper.

The survey was carried out across several European countries, including Belgium, France, Germany, Italy, the Netherlands, Poland, and Spain. These findings align closely with a similar 2014 study conducted in the UK by another survey firm. In that report, 1,114 consumers were asked which packaging material influenced their buying choices. A staggering 93% chose paper as their preferred option.

Industry experts believe this data highlights a growing trend among European consumers who prioritize convenience, visual appeal, and sustainability in product packaging. Corrugated paper packaging continues to be the top choice in Europe, and this survey reaffirms that when it comes to fresh produce, paper-wrapped items are more likely to catch a customer’s eye and drive sales than those in plastic.
