Bamboo will become the building material of the 21st century

According to reports, bamboo will become a building material for the 21st century. Some people call bamboo "plant steel" because it is attractive in environmental protection.

According to the Spanish newspaper "News", as a member of the family of empty stem materials, bamboo first appeared in the construction of thatched cottages in the tropics, and gradually gained attention in the field of building materials. From Hawaii to Vietnam, bamboo is used to build houses, churches and bridges.

Compared with trees, bamboo grows rapidly and absorbs twice as much carbon dioxide as ordinary trees. American architect Darrell Debor said: "There is no better building material than bamboo."

In January of this year, the world's largest bamboo-built building was unveiled in Mexico City, which is the “nomadic museum”. This is a temporary building of 5,130 square meters, almost half the size of the central square of Mexico City, and is a masterpiece of Canadian artist Gregory Colbert.

Simon Bélez, a Colombian architect and a family of architects, discovered the natural toughness and flexibility of bamboo with a small amount of screws 20 years ago. This bamboo can be used to build a church dome that can carry 10 tons of weight. But bamboo needs to be treated with boric acid to avoid termite attack.

Today, the work using Velez's technology has spread throughout Brazil, India and Germany. Belles also built a new store for the French supermarket Carrefour with bamboo in Colombia. The supermarket covers an area of 2,000 square meters and has a 16-meter-high dome built with bamboo. Using bamboo instead of metal to build a dome can ensure the lighting effect and reduce the cost of installing air conditioning equipment.

German architect Jorge Stam used the technology of Belles in Bali, Indonesia, to build a 50-meter-long bamboo bridge that is strong enough to carry trucks.

In 1991, an earthquake measuring 7.7 on the Richter scale occurred in Costa Rica. A large number of brick and reinforced concrete buildings collapsed, but more than 20 buildings built with bamboo were safe.

More than 1,100 bamboos are distributed in the tropics, reducing the effects of harmful emissions and absorbing water like desert cactus.
