Nova Chemicals has developed a successful transparent, impact-modified styrene acrylic (SMMA) copolymer with the goal of replacing transparent ABS resin. Acrylics, polycarbonates and PETGs with improved impact properties, mainly used in medical devices, equipment, consumer electronics and personal care products, allegedly under the trade name Zylar 390, provide excellent transparency and toughness. As well as chemical resistance, good processability, excellent dyeability, high gloss, low black spots, and ease of drying.
The Izod notched impact strength of Zylar 390 reaches 107J/m and the elongation at break reaches 65%, which is much higher than that of ABS and acrylic resin. The new product has a density of 104g/cm3 and the melt mass flow rate is 4 g/10 min. With a softening point of 97°C and a heat deflection temperature of 68°C at 18MPa, Zylar 390 can be gamma ray sterilized or vinyl oxide sterilized to meet USP Class VI requirements.
