Sogrape: Return to Nature - Reuse of Cork in Wine Bottles

Portugal's wine industry giant Sogrape recently decided to use a screw plug to seal a bottle of the company's important wine brand. The industry called the company's actions "a brave move." In the past decade, the market for natural cork stoppers has shrunk. Of the 18 billion wine stoppers sold in 2009, natural cork accounted for 69%, screw plugs accounted for 11%, and plastic cork stoppers accounted for 20%, whereas 10 years ago, 95% of wine bottles were used. Natural cork sealed bottle.

The Quinta de Azevedo Vinho Verde 2010 wine, which was described as “lively with fresh taste, moderate acidity, and refreshing pleasure”, was priced at approximately 6.99 lbs. in the US supermarket chain Waitrose. The largest wine chain in the UK, Majestic Wines, and the Wine Society are all sold.

“This wine is not the first wine in Portugal to be bottled with a screw plug, but in Portugal, wines sealed with screw plugs are rare,” James Forbes, marketing manager for wine importer Stevens Garner, told reporters.

“Sogrape is Portugal’s largest wine company and this situation is even rarer. For the company, sealing the bottle with a screw plug is a little maverick, but it’s also a very brave move. But other wine companies in the industry may be Not optimistic about Sogrape's move."

The rationale for Forbes's speculation is that Sogrape is Portugal's largest wine company. The company's wines are sold all over Portugal and they also have Finca Flichmann in Argentina. The higher the status, the greater the responsibility. The Portuguese wine industry generally hopes that the company can support the development of its own cork industry.

Natural cork produced in Portugal accounts for half of the world's total production of cork, and 80% of the world's wine cork is supplied by the country.

In countries that have embraced screw plugs as fully as New Zealand, 90% of wines are bottled with screw plugs.

The Sogrape's junior wine brand Terra Franca has all sealed up with a screw plug, but it is strange that Portuguese wines themselves are sealed without natural cork stoppers. In fact, in some parts of Portugal, such as Douro, it is illegal to seal bottles with corks made of synthetic materials.

Júlio Martins, Sogrape's export manager, told reporters that they just "respond to market demands" and they have not taken the lead in using screw plugs.

“Considering the Quinta de Azevedo's light body and fresh taste, the use of screw plug closures allows consumers to open and re-seal wine.”

Apcor of the Portuguese Cork Association said that a brewery uses screw plugs to seal bottles. It does not mean that all wineries have abandoned cork stoppers. It is said that the annual growth rate of the cork industry's exports is 8.5%, and in the first two months of 2011, the export volume of cork stoppers has even reached double-digit growth. In addition, Amorim, the leader in cork manufacturing, also announced the highest performance in 140 years. The continuous success of natural cork depends on three key advantages: technical performance, added value, and sustainability. In the cork export market, whether it is the United States, the United Kingdom or China, these three major advantages are all of vital importance.
