The IAAF places a strong emphasis on the development and maintenance of track and field facilities at the grassroots level. According to official guidelines, the lifespan of synthetic track surfaces should be at least two to three times that of the underlying foundation. This means that the base layer of the facility should be designed to last between 25 to 30 years, ensuring long-term durability and performance.
In order to meet these high standards, the IAAF has outlined several key criteria for the construction of running tracks:
1. The foundation must be strong enough to support heavy equipment and materials during construction without deforming or exceeding the ground's load capacity.
2. It should provide stable support to prevent any deformation under the weight of athletes and regular use.
3. The design should protect the ground from damage caused by groundwater and frost, ensuring the integrity of the surface.
4. The track surface must offer the right balance of grip and cushioning to enhance athlete performance and safety.
5. Proper drainage is essential to manage both rainwater and natural groundwater, directing it away from the playing area.
6. After heavy rainfall, the track must remain free of standing water to ensure continuous usability.
7. All of the above requirements must be consistently followed throughout the entire construction process.
8. Cost-effectiveness is also a priority, considering both initial construction expenses and long-term maintenance costs.
The IAAF further emphasizes the importance of proper structural layers in different conditions. In ideal locations, there should be at least 150mm of free-draining material beneath 60mm of asphalt concrete. However, in less favorable areas, a thicker structural layer of 400–500mm may be necessary. This is especially important in colder climates where temperatures drop below freezing. A deeper structure helps prevent frost heave, which can cause cracks and damage to the track surface over time.
