Causes and countermeasures of unsatisfactory printed original pictures of newspapers

Most operators only use options such as resolution and scaling when scanning images with a scanner, and the rest use default settings. Practice has proved that this way can not get the best scanning effect. Especially when the original image is defective, the scan result is even more unsatisfactory. When scanning defective images, how can the best performance of the scanner be used to produce higher quality images? This requires careful analysis of the original manuscript, make full use of some original correction functions provided by the scanner, and carefully adjust the scanner's preset values.

1. Pictures with inaccurate exposure

Adjust the brightness and contrast when scanning. Overexposed pictures appear white due to too high brightness; underexposed pictures appear black due to too low brightness. At the same time, the image lacks layers and details are not rich. At this time, we can drag the sliders on the brightness and contrast sliders to make the brightness of the image moderate and the contrast suitable. Since the adjustment of brightness and contrast is effective for all pixels in the image, care should be taken not to lose sight of each other in the adjustment. For example, the main information of the picture is located in a darker area, making it brighter can make the details more obvious. However, when the brightness adjustment function is used to brighten all areas, all details in the areas with higher brightness will be lost.

Second, the color picture

The color balance should be adjusted when scanning. If the image has a slight color cast, you can use the color balance option to change the overall color tone of the image. When the color cast is not serious, you can select the "automatic color balance" option to let the software automatically correct it; when the color cast is serious, you must manually adjust it. The color of the scanner is mainly a mixture of red, green and blue. The scanner provides adjustment functions for each of the three basic colors. There are three sliders for the adjustment options: red, green, and blue. To adjust the image color, just drag the slider on the slider to the color to be added to the image, or drag the slider away from the color to be reduced. Color adjustment requires some knowledge of color science, especially the principle of complementary colors: two colors in opposite positions on the color wheel are called a pair of complementary colors, such as red and cyan, green and magenta, blue and yellow Complementary colors. The so-called complementarity refers to the decrease of a color in an image, which inevitably leads to the increase of its complementary color. It is absolutely impossible for a color and its complementary color to increase or decrease simultaneously.

Third, the lack of pictures

The gamma value should be adjusted when scanning. The gamma value affects the hue of the middle value of the graphic or the gray level of the middle layer. By adjusting the gamma value, you can change the brightness value of the grayscale of the middle tone of the image to increase the middle level of the image without affecting the levels of the dark and bright parts. Entering a larger number will expand the range of midtones. This will allow images with a large proportion of midtones to produce less contrast and more detail. Entering a number smaller than one will narrow the range of midtones. Doing so will increase the contrast of the image and reduce the details of the image. When the curve moves downward, the corresponding pixel of the image becomes darker; when it moves upward, the corresponding pixel becomes brighter. Its adjustment often needs to be used in conjunction with brightness and contrast to achieve satisfactory results.

Fourth, the picture is not ideal

When scanning, proper cropping is necessary. Improperly framed pictures often have a cluttered background, the subject is not prominent or the scene is skewed, and the visual effect is poor. When scanning, you can choose the scanning range to choose the original image according to your needs, correct the skewed image, and create an artistic re-creation. The specific operation is to select the "scan size" as "user-defined" in the scan setting options, and then use the method of dragging the selection box in the preview image window to select the area to be scanned. The method is: hold down the left mouse button at the corner of the area to be scanned, drag the selection box to the opposite corner of the scan area, and release the left button. In this way, the scanner will automatically scan only the selected area. For pictures with skewed scenes, just use the "rotate" function to correct.

5. Printed pictures

When scanning, you need to use the screen removal function. The printing field uses screen printing technology, which relies on countless small dots of different sizes to express the brightness of the image. These small dots are acceptable to the naked eye, but they are a problem that cannot be ignored for the scanner, because when the scanner scans printed photos, these small dots will be scanned in, affecting the quality of the image. The mesh removal technology can analyze the image with dots and restore it to the original without dots to reproduce the effect of the original picture. Scanners generally have several options for us to choose from. When the original picture is a magazine or film print, please select "Magazine"; when the original picture is a newspaper or a rough dot print, please select "newspaper"; when the original picture is a high-quality exquisite print, the dot is very small, Please select "Art Print". It should be noted that if you are scanning non-printed materials, you must select "do not set", do not turn on this function, because it will reduce the quality of the scanned image.

By modifying the scanning parameters, some deficiencies of the original image can be made up during scanning, and the scanning effect is appropriately improved, but the effect is always limited. To get the ideal scanning effect, the best way is to choose a good picture.

6. Pictures downloaded from the Internet

Since most of the pictures downloaded on the Internet are in RGB mode, and the color range of RGB mode is larger than CMYK mode, in order to ensure the printing effect of the image, it is best to use RGB mode for processing, and finally convert to CMYK mode. When editing images in RGB mode in Photoshop, select the CMYK preview option in the View menu. In other words, edit the image in RGB mode and display the image in CMYK mode. Since most of the downloaded images are of display size, the area is small. When we make the images needed for newspapers, the images will not be clear enough. If there is a mosaic, you should pay more attention to it. Do not sharpen too much when sharpening. Properly do some blurring before sharpening. If the original image is a color image, but it is to be used in a grayscale layout, do not directly edit the original image to grayscale mode during processing. The RGB mode should be used for processing. The processed image is first converted into an L * a * b * mode image, and then the channel separation command is used to select the L * channel image as the grayscale image for printing. Note that do not switch between the two modes RGB and CMYK, let alone switch the two modes back and forth, because in the bitmap image editing software, each time the color space of the image is converted, some of the details of the original image will be lost information.

Matters needing attention in the processing of images printed on newsprint: in order to make the colors brighter, the main color should be appropriately increased, or the opposite color should be appropriately reduced; the dark tone should be properly discarded to maintain the bright tone; the face value of the black and white image of the character should not be too high, To avoid being too dark, the bright tone should be enough.

In short, for the scanning and production of images in the prepress system, there are very deep knowledge and experience. Therefore, the operator of the pre-press system must be able to master various techniques of image processing, improve his own aesthetics, accurately judge the quality of the picture, and really get a good picture printing effect, do n’t be afraid of trouble, adjust it carefully, and strive to achieve The processed picture has a higher quality than the original.

Knife blocks are typically made from wood, but with modern designs, a handful of materials are available.

Plastic knife blocks may use slots or universal designs. While these are affordable, they are not the most durable.

Stainless steel knife blocks are sleek and classy and somewhat more durable than plastic models. They tend to be easier to clean than wood blocks, because steel does not absorb water. However, in some cases, the slots may be plastic or steel - plastic is susceptible to wear, and steel may damage your blades.

Wooden knife blocks may be made from bamboo or other less expensive woods. If you`re hoping for an environmentally friendly design, take note of whether a block is fully bamboo or simply has bamboo veneers and a wood core.
