Yu-ship Big Bang UNICO watch test report

If I were to ask which of the top 10 Swiss watch brands over the past decade has shown the most impressive growth, I wouldn’t hesitate for a second—Hublot. While the watch industry may seem slow and serene, it’s actually a fiercely competitive arena where only those who keep moving forward can truly succeed. Hublot's rise isn't just due to smart marketing; it's also the result of relentless innovation and leadership in the industry. One of their standout creations is the Big Bang UNICO series, a timepiece that exemplifies this progress.

At the heart of every great watch lies its movement, and the UNICO is an automatic mechanical movement developed by Hublot. When you first hear it ticking, it feels crisp and powerful, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour—equivalent to 8 beats per second. This high-frequency movement is known for precision and reliability. The UNICO’s automatic rotor is designed for efficiency and durability, featuring a two-way winding system that avoids the common issue of one-sided winding found in other movements like the Vantex 7750. Plus, the use of high-tech ceramic in the automatic bearing minimizes wear during winding. During my visit to the Hublot Professional Watchmaking Institute, Master Mathias showed me how the internal structure of the UNICO movement is optimized for both performance and ease of maintenance, highlighting the elegance of modern mechanical engineering.

From a functional perspective, the primary purpose of a watch is to accurately measure time, much like a sports teacher’s stopwatch. The Big Bang UNICO series stands out with a 60-minute chronograph function instead of the traditional 30-minute option. This small but significant change makes it ideal for use in football matches, where each half lasts 45 minutes. It’s no surprise that Hublot is the official timekeeper of the World Cup. The chronograph feature uses a smooth gradient mode, meaning the minute hand moves continuously rather than jumping abruptly. Additionally, users can restart the chronograph without stopping it first, making it incredibly useful in racing or competitive events where timing accuracy is crucial.

Since the success of the Vantex 7750 in the 1970s, chronograph movements have split into two main types: the traditional column-wheel design and the modern lever-type movement. Think of it like the difference between a revolver and an automatic pistol. Lever movements are simpler, more affordable, and widely used, but they lack the sophistication of column-wheel mechanisms. The latter, known for high machining precision, is often found in luxury watches. The Big Bang UNICO inherits the column-wheel design while adding a modern aesthetic. Even small details, like mirror-polished screws and double-bevel gears, add to its visual appeal. With 38 ruby bearings and 330 individual parts, the UNICO movement is a masterpiece of engineering.

Looking at the watch’s design, the Big Bang UNICO features a luminous dial that’s easy to read even in low light. Its asymmetric layout and transparent elements give it a mysterious, mechanical charm. The 45.5mm titanium case, finished with a brushed texture, looks stunning under different lighting conditions. The crown is wrapped in a rubber ring, blending functionality with aesthetics. The quick-release buttons on the sides allow for effortless strap changes in just seconds. The folding clasp uses two fixed pins, offering better security than traditional single-pin buckles and helping to extend the life of the strap. Every detail, from the rubber strap to the case thickness, is perfectly balanced, making the Big Bang UNICO a true symbol of modern luxury.
