When it comes to watches, the heart of any timepiece lies in its movement. The UNICO movement, developed by Hublot, is an automatic mechanical movement that stands out for its precision and performance. The sound of its operation is crisp and powerful, with a frequency of 28,800 vibrations per hour—equivalent to 8 beats per second. This high-frequency movement ensures accuracy and reliability. The UNICO movement also features a two-way winding system, eliminating the inefficiency found in many traditional movements like the Valjoux 7750. Additionally, the use of high-tech ceramic in the automatic top bearing minimizes wear and tear, making it both durable and efficient. During my visit to the Hublot Professional Watchmaking Institute, Master Mathias guided me through the disassembly of the UNICO movement. What stood out was how well-optimized and easy to maintain it was, showcasing the beauty of modern mechanical engineering in the 21st century.
From a functional perspective, one of the key roles of a watch is to accurately measure time, much like a sports teacher's stopwatch. The Big Bang UNICO series offers a unique feature: it can accumulate up to 60 minutes instead of the usual 30. This small but significant change makes it ideal for use in football matches, where games last around 45 minutes. It's no surprise that Hublot is the official timekeeper of the World Cup. The chronograph function uses a gradient mode rather than a jump mode, allowing users to restart the timer instantly without stopping it first. This is especially useful in racing or competition settings, where timing needs to be precise and continuous. Unlike many other chronographs, the UNICO movement allows for seamless operation, ensuring accuracy and ease of use. The chronograph button feels smooth and responsive, striking a perfect balance between comfort and precision.
Since the rise of the Valjoux 7750 in the 1970s, the chronograph movement world has split into two main styles: the traditional column-wheel design and the modern lever-type mechanism. Think of it like the difference between a revolver and an automatic pistol. Lever movements are simpler, more cost-effective, and widely used today. While they are reliable, they lack the sophistication and exclusivity of column-wheel designs. The latter, known for its high machining precision, is often referred to as "crown wheel" in some older watch literature. Most high-end chronographs use this mechanism. The Big Bang UNICO series adopts the column-wheel style but adds a modern twist. Small details, like mirror-polished screws and double-bevel gears, elevate the design, giving the movement a sleek, futuristic look. The movement contains 38 ruby bearings and 330 parts, making it a masterpiece of craftsmanship.
Looking at the design of the watch itself, the Big Bang UNICO series shines with luminous hands and a clear dial, making it easy to read even in low-light conditions. Its asymmetric dial and transparent elements create a sense of mystery, drawing you into the world of mechanics. The 45.5mm titanium case, finished with a brushed texture, looks stunning under different lighting conditions—morning light, window light, incandescent, or energy-saving. No matter where you wear it, it always looks great. The crown is wrapped in a rubber ring, combining functionality with aesthetics—a true reflection of Hublot's philosophy of blending art and technology. The quick-release buttons on the sides of the case allow for fast strap changes without needing tools, making it convenient for everyday use. The folding clasp features two fixed pins, offering better protection for the strap compared to traditional single-pin buckles. The rubber strap is perfectly proportioned with the case thickness, adding to the overall elegance of the design.
