Although the 53rd World Table Tennis Championships in Suzhou have come to an end, the Suzhou International Expo Center continues to be recognized as a top-tier venue for world-class table tennis events. The transformation of this space into a professional stadium has not only met international standards but also set a new benchmark for efficient and sustainable event hosting.
The renovation project, which began on December 1, 2014, lasted four months and involved a total reconstruction area of approximately 110,000 square meters. The success of this transformation was largely due to the integration of a professional sports system that ensured all technical requirements were met. According to Xu Wenhai, Chairman of Zhongzhihua Body Co., Ltd., responsible for the design of the project, transforming a convention center into a championship venue is far more than just rearranging spaces. It requires careful planning across multiple disciplines, including flooring, seating, electrical systems, and intelligent infrastructure.
One of the key principles behind the renovation was frugality. The project strictly adhered to the principle of not damaging the original building structure. Instead of demolishing the existing concrete floor, they used removable wooden flooring that could be easily dismantled after the event. All major systems—such as lighting, sound, large screens, and networking—were leased rather than permanently installed, significantly reducing costs.
Despite being a temporary setup, the competition experience was no less impressive than that of a dedicated sports facility. The audience seating was designed to bring fans closer to the action, enhancing the overall atmosphere. Innovative screen technology, similar to what is used in the NBA, was employed to ensure optimal visibility from all angles. The lighting system was capable of instant activation and deactivation, while the network infrastructure was upgraded to support mobile and Wi-Fi connectivity, improving the viewing experience for both spectators and remote audiences.
Beyond the visible improvements, the invisible details played a crucial role in ensuring smooth operations. Xu Wenhai emphasized the importance of organizing specific pathways for athletes, referees, media, and spectators to avoid congestion and delays. Without such planning, even small venues like the auxiliary arena or training hall could become chaotic, affecting the flow of the event.
The cost savings were significant. While building a new stadium with full specifications would typically cost around 300 million yuan, the renovation of the Suzhou Expo Center was completed for about 4 million yuan. After the event, most of the equipment was removed, allowing the venue to quickly return to its original function as an exhibition and conference center with minimal effort.
This successful transformation demonstrated how multi-functional spaces can be efficiently utilized for different types of events. The Suzhou International Expo Center became a pioneer in cross-border event applications, offering a model for other convention centers to follow. As the domestic sports market grows and national fitness initiatives gain momentum, more venues will likely adopt similar strategies, integrating sports elements and smart systems into their operations.
