Furniture purchase: how to choose environmentally friendly furniture

Furniture shopping involves more than just style and comfort — it also requires attention to environmental safety, material quality, and long-term durability. Here are some key points to consider when choosing furniture. First, while big brand furniture is generally environmentally safe, this doesn't mean there are no exceptions. National standards ensure a baseline of safety, but defective products can still occur. Therefore, it's important to be cautious and check details, just like you would with other purchases such as electronics or appliances. In addition to formaldehyde, other harmful substances like benzene, toluene, and VOCs (volatile organic compounds) may be present in furniture. Formaldehyde often comes from adhesives used in particleboard or MDF, but if the board is of high quality (like E0-grade or solid wood), and properly sealed, the risk is lower. Benzene pollution, on the other hand, mainly comes from oil-based paints, which is why water-based paints are a safer option. Solid wood furniture isn’t automatically eco-friendly, so always check the type of finish used. Online reviews can be misleading. Some are based on rare incidents, while others may be fake reviews from competitors. It’s wise to take them with a grain of salt. Everyone has different tastes, and what one person finds unappealing, another might love. Buying from well-known stores offers more security. These retailers usually have clear return policies and customer service support. Before finalizing your purchase, make sure to review the warranty and after-sales terms. Also, only furniture that meets environmental standards is typically sold in these stores, making them a safer choice. It’s worth noting that very few stores sell 100% solid wood furniture. Most use a combination of materials — for example, the frame may be solid wood, but internal panels are often made of particleboard. Be especially careful with less-known brands, as their quality may not meet expectations. Setting realistic expectations is essential. Don’t expect perfect results right away. Allow yourself at least one to two months to get used to new furniture, as different pieces may require different adjustment periods. The moisture content of wood should not exceed 12%. High moisture can cause warping or deformation. While most consumers don’t have testing tools, you can check by touching the inside of the furniture or unpainted areas. If it feels damp, the moisture level is too high. Another method is to sprinkle a little water on the wood — if it doesn’t absorb quickly, the moisture content is likely too high. Material quality matters. For example, table legs and chair frames should be made of hardwood for strength, while internal parts can use other materials. The thickness of wardrobe legs should be around 2.5 cm — too thick and it looks bulky, too thin and it may bend. Kitchen and bathroom cabinets should be made of plywood, not fiberboard, because fiberboard can swell when exposed to moisture. Dining tables should be easy to clean, and if you notice insect holes or bubbles in the wood, it could mean improper drying. Check the inside of drawers and doors for signs of rot, and test with your fingernail. If it breaks off easily, the material may be deteriorating. Smell the inside — a strong chemical odor could indicate excessive formaldehyde. Finally, check the structure. For smaller items like chairs or stools, try dragging them on the floor. A crisp sound indicates good construction, while a dull thud suggests poor assembly. For desks, shake them to see if they’re stable. For sofas, sit down and move around — if it wobbles, it may be poorly made. Square tables, chairs, and other furniture should have triangular supports for stability. When choosing, inspect the joints and seams carefully. For fabric chairs, feel the padding to ensure it's firm and comfortable.
