Today, more and more fashion designers are exploring the potential of 3D printing technology in their creative process, pushing the boundaries of what's possible in terms of design, materials, and functionality. One such designer is Silvia Fado, a footwear innovator who has partnered with 3D printing company HXX to create unique shoes using carbon fiber, aiming to test the limits of this cutting-edge technology.
Fado’s fascination with new technologies and engineering stems from her background as an architect. Although she eventually transitioned into fashion, her designs often reflect the structural thinking typical of architectural projects. After mastering traditional shoemaking techniques in London, where she grew up, she earned her master’s degree in fashion footwear design at the London College of Fashion.
She enjoys exploring the relationship between body movement and fashion, particularly in sneaker design. Her toolkit ranges from traditional craftsmanship to high-tech methods like 3D printing, laser cutting, and CNC machining. This blend of old and new allows her to create innovative yet functional footwear.
Her latest project, CARBONALISE, was created for the South 36.32n fashion festival in Cadiz, Spain. Developed in collaboration with HXX, these shoes are made from carbon fiber, offering both strength and lightness. While the custom version of CARBONALISE can cost up to 1,000 euros, Fado believes the investment is justified by the advanced engineering and comfort it provides.
“Many fashion footwear designs prioritize aesthetics over function,†Fado explains. “This project brings essential elements from sports shoes—like cushioning, weight, grip, and durability—into high-end fashion. These are often missing in traditional fashion footwear.â€
She has been deeply analyzing the comfort aspects of footwear, including shock absorption, weight distribution, and grip. Her goal is to integrate these features into high-heeled women’s shoes, making them not only stylish but also practical for everyday wear.
The design also takes into account internal foot movements. Fado and her team have developed various mechanisms, such as springs, rubber balls, pneumatic systems, and metal rings, all made using carbon fiber. This ensures that the shoes adapt to the wearer’s motion while maintaining structural integrity.
Despite the high-tech approach, Fado still incorporates traditional craftsmanship into the production process. Techniques like leather crafting, metalworking, and wood shaping play a significant role in bringing her vision to life.
By merging innovation with tradition, Fado is redefining what 3D printed footwear can be—pushing the boundaries of fashion, function, and technology.
