In a recent innovation at Comerica Park, home of the Detroit Tigers in Major League Baseball, fans have been captivated by a new 3D photo booth introduced by Doob. This high-tech installation, originally a temporary booth, has been transformed into a full-body 3D scanner called the "doob-licator." The goal of this project is to offer loyal fans a unique and personalized keepsake—3D printed miniatures of themselves in full color.
When a fan steps into the booth, they are captured by 54 high-definition Canon EOS cameras, which work together to create a detailed 3D model. This digital file is then sent to Doob's manufacturing center in Brooklyn, where it is 3D printed using polymer resin powder. The final product, known as a "doob," is a miniature replica that fans can take home as a memorable souvenir.
In addition to scanning fans, Doob also pre-scanned the team’s mascot, Paws, allowing fans to choose to print a portrait featuring the mascot. This feature adds an extra layer of fun and personalization for visitors.
This initiative is part of a test project aimed at assessing the feasibility of the business model. If successful, Doob plans to expand the concept to other professional baseball leagues. The company estimates that each game could generate around 10 orders for 3D-printed portraits.
Michael Anderson, president of Doob, emphasized the emotional connection fans have with their teams and cities. “It makes sense to bring a 3D scanner to Detroit,†he said. “Although it's just starting, it has already generated a lot of interest. The Tigers are excited about it too. It's an emotional product, and people love it.â€
Looking ahead, Doob aims to scan every member of the Tigers' roster, creating standard 3D models that fans can use to pose with their favorite players and turn the scene into a permanent sculpture.
Currently, the pricing for the 3D portraits ranges from $100 for a 4-inch (10 cm) model to $695 for a 14-inch version. There are five different sizes available. After a scan, the printing process takes approximately 18 hours, followed by a week of curing to ensure the quality and durability of the final product.
This innovative approach not only enhances the fan experience but also brings a new level of engagement and creativity to sports memorabilia. With its blend of technology and personalization, Doob is setting a new standard for fan interaction in the world of professional sports.
