With the popularity of digital technology, more and more designers, engineers, makers and artists need 3D printers or laser cutting machines to help them make models. Although logically speaking, users can only buy a laser cutter and 3D printer to buy, but if there is a functional module to the user's 3D printers transform into a laser cutting machine, then it is an economical and affordable solution.
This is what Russian entrepreneur George Fomitchev and Endurance electrical engineer Matteo Borri wanted to do. They developed an L-CHEAPO 445-nano blue laser diode that can be mounted on 3D printers and CNC.
“The price of laser cutting machines is relatively high, but it has greatly improved the user's manufacturing capabilities – laser-cut parts are harder than 3D printed parts,†the development team said. “But if you use Endurance's L-CHEAPO module, You don't have to spend thousands of dollars to buy a laser cutter, and this module doesn't take up space."
In addition, this open source module has no other requirements - including software and power supply, quite convenient. In use, the module can be easily switched from 3D printing/CNC mode to laser cutting mode using existing 3D printing or CNC software (such as Slic3r) to create a path for cutting and engraving.
At the time of testing, the Endurance team was able to cut paper or wood accurately and engrave most of the non-metallic materials. When not in use, the user can remove it in less than two minutes. According to Fomitchev and Borri, the feature module is priced at $195/piece, and since the company was founded in January 2015, it has sold 1,000 of the product.
“We think this product can be used in high school science classes, small universities and maker spaces, it can handle a lot of materials, and it's cheap,†Fomitchev said in an email. “All you need is to hang the laser, create a special extrusion profile with your standard software, and start working.â€
