Ford Motor will launch PET bottle recycling material

Ford Motor Co. and Unifi, headquartered in Greensboro, North Carolina, will also launch waste bottle collection campaigns for their models at the North American International Auto Show unveiled in Detroit this month and at the 2012 International Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas.
DEARBORN, MI, USA (January 24, 2012) There are approximately 2 million plastic bottles that will be used in the 2012 Ford Focus Electric and Ford Motor Company's future models. Recycled PET material is also used in the Ford 2012 Escape models.
According to a recently released press release, each Ford Focus Electric Vehicle uses interior fabrics made from approximately 22 recycled PET bottles, which are supplied by Unifi Inc. through its Repreve recycled fiber brand. Unifi's Repreve seat fabrics are polyester fibers made from recycled materials. Sources include post-consumer waste, such as industrial post-consumer waste fibers and PET bottles.
Roger Berrier, president and chief operating officer of Unifi, said in a statement: “Although it has been widely publicized for decades, the US PET bottle recycling rate is still only 29%, which is about half of Europe. We hope to use Ford’s The PET bottle regeneration program will make the importance of recycling better known. It will strive to increase the recycling rate of PET bottles in the United States to 100%, turn millions of plastic bottles into waste, and possibly make them. Repreve fiber products."
